The American Herald: Call for Papers

The Board of Governors of the American Heraldry Society is issuing a standing call for papers, inviting authors to contribute to The American Herald: The Journal of The American Heraldry Society.

The American Herald publishes scholarly articles, essays, notes and commentaries directed to a wide audience. The contents of the journal reflect a wide range of scholarly concerns. Articles present significant findings and/or theoretical analyses from heraldry and related fields. Essays are interpretive, speculative, or polemic. Notes are narrower in scope and focus on a single, often provocative, issue of definition, interpretation, or amplification. Commentaries briefly address topics raised in earlier articles, essays, or notes. The views expressed in the journal are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the Society or its officers.

Submissions should be original — not previously published. Paper topics should be related to the art, science, history, and/or usage of heraldry within the modern geographic boundaries of the United States, or provide an international context directly pertaining to heraldry within the United States. Papers that focus on heraldry outside of the anglosphere are especially welcome, including explorations of heraldry in Spanish Puerto Rico or French Louisiana or Maine.

An exception to the above requirements will be made for first time English translations of previously published non-English scholarly articles in order to provide a broader international context to our largely anglophone audience.

Submissions may be sent to editor@americanheraldry.org in Word format. They will be accepted on a rolling basis, there is no deadline. The American Herald follows generally the 15th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. Authors should use American, not British, spelling.

The editor would be happy to discuss ideas for papers prior to their being written, and submissions by individuals who are not members of the Society are welcomed, especially from the world of academia. The editor should be contacted via email.
